Heart attack, also known as myocardial infarction, is considered to be the leading cause of death in the world. Although mostly men suffer from it, women are also nowadays being admitted in hospital due to heart attacks.
It has been seen that the symptoms of heart attack in women is quite different from those experienced by men. In fact, mild heart attack symptoms are so uncharacteristic of the problem that often the attack is not diagnosed.
When women suffer from a mild cardiac arrest, they do not experience the usual chest pain that men suffer from. However, there are still heart symptoms in women if noted can be ensure that women get timely treatment and avert a bigger attack.
It has been seen that just 30 percent of women complain of chest pain on the left side of the body. This is a symptom nonetheless. The severity of the pain is proportionate to the intensity of the attack. If you happen to experience a crushing pain in the chest, do not wait. Call for emergency medical assistance immediately.
Just before a heart attack, many women complain of unusual and uncharacteristic tiredness and fatigue. This, in fact, is a common symptom and nearly 70 percent of women experience it.
Around 42 percent of women complain of indigestion and heartburn prior to a myocardial infarction. Even taking antacid does not alleviate the problem. Often women tend to ignore this symptom as they put it to acid reflux or overeating. If you do not suffer from heartburn generally, you should never neglect the symptom.
Just like men, women also suffer from shortness of breath with the onset of a heart attack. Nearly 48 percent women experience this symptom where they start gasping and panting.
Other symptoms of heart attack in women include feeling dizzy, lightheaded, nausea, and experiencing pain in the upper parts of the abdomen, between the shoulder blades, or on the inner side of the arms. Also, severe perspiration or feeling a sense of impending doom are also observed.
If you suffer from two or more the symptoms mentioned above, you should immediately call emergency services or go to the nearest hospital.
